Site Managers Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS)

 

What is it?

The SMSTS Course is a 5 day training programme conducted in the classroom. The training is taken by over ten thousand students each year to gain the appropriate safety training to manage safely on construction sites.
The UKCG (UK Contractors Group) recognises the SMSTS as the industry requirement for all staff including managers, supervisors, foremen, project managers and client facing staff to have the best training in managing safely on site. The UK Contractors Group require this course for management level staff to understand their legal responsibilities.

 

Who is it for?

This course is intended for project managers, site managers and supervisors as well as proprietors of small to medium sized companies. Client-based personnel would also benefit from attending the course. Possession of this qualification is listed in the Approved Code of Practice for the Construction (Design and Management) (CDM) Regulations as a demonstration of competence in the role of site manager.

What will I learn?

  • Introduction to health and safety law, duties, responsibilities, enforcement and sanctions

  • Overviews/explanations of CDM Regulations and other relevant construction regulations

  • Accidents – costs, causes, investigation, prevention and reporting systems

  • Risk assessment and risk control

  • Safety management systems, policies, plans, performance and measuring

  • Management of contractors

  • Development of ’safe systems of work’ and permit systems

  • Effective communications on site

  • Behavioural science including awareness of human error

  • Motivating good safety behaviour

  • Construction company’s duties and responsibilities

  • Responsibilities of Managers, Supervisors and Operatives

  • Planning for health and safety management on a project, including work at height, confined spaces, excavations, electricity, scaffolding and demolition

It also includes recent changes in accepted working practices. Price includes the construction skills publication Construction Site Safety – Health, Safety and Environmental Information Manual (GE700), registration, certification and exam fees.

 

Grant Available

For those companies who are registered with the CITB for Grant and Levy purposes, you will be able to claim (subject to CITB approval) £50 per day of training for this course. This would equate to £250 that can be claimed for the CITB SMSTS Course.
Grant Process: Please ensure your delegate is provided the Company Name, Registered Address and CITB Levy number. The student is required to provide these details during their class on their personal registration form.
The CITB will process the grant using these details directly with the registered company post completion of the course.
